Audrey Reads

Good reading doesn't have to mean spending a fortune on the latest bestsellers. I read a lot of books from my local library, borrow books from friends, and buy used books. If you are more concerned with good reading than showing off your books, check my reviews for some great reads.

Now this is a detective novel with a twist. Vincent Rubio is a private eye who works in Los Angeles with his partner, Ernie. They handle a lot of divorce investigations, other lower class detective work. Ernie is recently divorced, and can’t seem to get over his ex-wife. When she contacts the men asking for their help, Ernie is ready to dive in with both feet. Vincent is more reticent, but when she explains that her little brother has gotten caught up in a "back-to-nature" cult, they take the case.

Oh, did I mention that they are all dinosaurs?

Yes, Mr. Garcia takes us behind the latex disguises to show that dinosaurs are alive and well, and living right next door. Meet Vincent’s friend Jules, a maker of human disguises for dinosaurs. Jules is a male dino, living as a human female impersonator. Did you follow that?

Circe, a beautiful Velociraptor is a leader of the Progressives, the back to nature cult. She gets under Vincent’s latex suit, and under his skin. The detectives manage to kidnap Ernie’s former brother-in-law from the cult and get him deprogrammed, only to have him commit suicide days later. Something here doesn’t jibe, and the boys are out to find the truth.

From LA to a tiny island in Hawaii, they follow Circe and infiltrate the Progressives, uncovering the dark secrets hiding behind the guises. And of course, they have to solve their other case: the theft of a rare and priceless prosthetic penis treasured in the dino community.

This book was definitely different, but the dinosaur twist wears thin after a while. I believe this is the second of three books about Vincent and Ernie, but it didn’t grab me enough to make me go looking for the others. It wasn’t bad, just wasn’t great.
